Most Frequently Asked Questions

Staff are frequently being asked for guidance on fees for commercial courses. This month’s ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ is devoted to commercial courses.

Q: What should I charge as Training fees?
A: In the past the Society suggested £10 per hour was a reasonable average. Better guidance these days is to charge local Adult Education Tutor rates. However, your course needs to cover costs, so use the financial advice in Code of Practice.

Q: Which courses attract a fee?
A: Anything that has a commercial or job-related viability. Common ones are National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches, Emergency Response and Rescue Test for Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities.

Q: Does the Assessor need to be paid? If so, what?
A: If the Trainer is being paid to deliver a course, then it is reasonable for the Assessor to be paid that same rate. In addition, REASONABLE travelling expenses could be covered.

Q: What is ‘Reasonable’?
A: If the Assessor is the nearest Assessor, that is reasonable. Distances of five or 10 miles would be reasonable. However, some places are very remote and these venues would need to be agreed in advance.

Q: I would like to earn money from my lifesaving activities. How can I do that?
A: Advise your Branch Executive of your availability, which awards you are interested in training or assessing and how far you are prepared to travel. Remember you will have a tax liability and will have to keep records for self-assessment purposes.

Q: How can I be sure I get a fair opportunity to attend a commercial course? They all seem to go to friends of the Teacher/BLC/Branch Secretary etc.
A: By registering your interest with your Branch Executive. Remember, you must be available to attend the courses. These courses may not come up very often and there may be others in your Branch who have also applied. Plus, bear in mind that you may already be ‘in the queue’ to be invited, but the opportunity has not yet arisen.
