RLSS UK Chief Medical Officer responds to media comments - Sophie Konderak Inquest 30-03-2010

A Message from Anthony J Handley MD FRCP, Chief Medical Adviser, RLSS UK It appears that there may have been adverse criticism of the lifeguard involved in the resuscitation attempt and many of these comments are based on reports in the media, and not on any official documents from the inquest itself. The Royal Life Saving Society UK follows closely the guidelines issued by the European Resuscitation Council and the Resuscitation Council (UK). For the current guidelines (2005), use of a pulse check by non-healthcare professionals was removed as a sign of cardiac arrest, the diagnosis being made by the absence of normal breathing in an unresponsive casualty. This change was based on good scientific evidence, carefully considered by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), that feeling for a carotid pulse can be very difficult, time-consuming, and inaccurate. The following is a quote from the Resuscitation Council (UK) Resuscitation Guidelines 2005 relating to adult basic life support: Continue resuscitation until: * qualified help arrives and takes over, * the victim starts breathing normally, or * you become exhausted. New resuscitation guidelines are due to be published by the European Resuscitation Council and the Resuscitation Council (UK) in October 2010. Until then, the 2005 guidelines remain current and valid.
