Please find below a list of our commonly asked questions. If your questions are not answered here, please feel free to contact us.

How old must I be to become a Beach Lifeguard?

The NBLQ course is open to candidates aged 16 and over.

Can a first aid qualification be included in the NBLQ programme?

Yes, provided that the trainer is also an HSE approved FAW Trainer. The NPLQ syllabus incorporates sufficient material to cover the syllabus for the Emergency Aid Certificate. A full HSE First Aid at Work Certificate can be included within the programme but this extends the course and it is unlikely that both the FAW and NPLQ elements and the NPLQ assessment could be "crammed" into 1 week.

Do I need to be fit to become a Beach Lifeguard?

Yes! The job demands that you are able to respond quickly in the event of an emergency - you will need to be a strong swimmer and in good physical health. click here to see fitness criteria

How long does the National Beach Lifeguard Qualification take to complete?

Courses run for at least 44 hours, usually spread out over a week. There are also competency assessments at the end of the course. For those that have completed other Society Awards like Bronze Medallion or Life Support 3 a maximum of 12 hours can be accredited as prior learning.

How do I become a volunteer Beach Lifeguard?

We have a number of lifeguard clubs and units petroling inland water and coastal locations. Training within a volunteer club environment is the best way of becoming a competent lifeguard.

Many people decide they would like to train as a Beach Lifeguard while visiting a beach and then visit one of our Lifeguard Clubs as a result. To find out about Clubs in your area,

What is the procedure for dealing with a complaint?

The complainant should liaise with the Training Centre Co-ordinator, Beach Operator or Authority to investigate the complaint. Unresolved matters may be referred to River House who may conduct an independent investigation.

What first aid qualifications may be used for exemption from part of the NPLQ assessment?

A full HSE approved First Aid at Work Certificate. Assessors MUST confirm that the candidate is able to undertake the range of skills by asking for a demonstration of part of the assessment syllabus.
